Sea lettuce solution in flames

Footage of the machine engulfed in flames as smoke billowed into the sky has been broadcast on French media following the incident at Saint-Michelle-en-Grève beach in Brittany on Monday.

The Infrastructure Department had hoped that the harvester would bring an end to the long-running sea lettuce problem in St Aubin’s Bay, but the trial, which was agreed after ministers travelled to Brittany to see the machine in action earlier this summer, has now been postponed.

In a statement, the department said only that the machine had suffered ‘technical problems’ and could not be released for testing in the Island and they said that the French company which owns the two harvesters had been planning to bring one of the machines over during the International Air Display week.
