Let Battle Commence – Island all set for the big parade

After hundreds of hours and the traditional last-minute touch-ups, floats were finalised overnight, ready forthe big parade in front of a large crowd.

Parade organisers said that tickets for parade – which is now in its 114th year – had sold quickly and had predicted that seated areas would be sold out, with plenty of standing room for spectators who turned up without booking.

And weather reports issued in advance of today’s event also appeared favourable as ahead of the festival, forecasters had predicted sunny and dry conditions for the popular parade.

A total of 27 teams were due to enter floral floats, including the Optimists Club, who will be hoping to hold onto the top award, the Prix d’Honneur, for a fifth consecutive year. The last team to win five consecutive Battles was the parish of Grouville, between 1965 and 1969.
