End of road for street market, but retail still in ‘good shape’

The latest setback came earlier this week with the news that a summer market which was scheduled to run until 18 September had closed prematurely because of a lack of interest from stallholders and shoppers.

The Sunday market in Broad Street, which was first held on 22 May this year, was created to bring increased footfall and a new shopping experience to the town every week during the summer and the parish even offered the first four Sundays as free days for stall owners to attend with their wares as a way to encourage and establish the market.

However, despite the parish’s best efforts, the number of stalls dwindled from nine to just four, and the decision was made to cancel the weekly event.
