Two more enter race for Senatorial seat

Ex-Deputy John Young, who failed to secure a seat as a Senator in the 2014 general election, and businesswoman Mary O’Keeffe-Burgher – a 2011 political hopeful – have joined the race to fill the vacant position following the resignation of Dr Zoe Cameron last month.

Former-politicians Sarah Ferguson and Guy De Faye, Reform Jersey Deputy Sam Mézec, entertainer Stevie Ocean, blogger Mike Dun and LGBT campaigner Christian May have already declared their intention to stand in the by-election, which is due to be held on 7 September.

Mr Young was the Environment Department’s chief officer and worked in financial and legal services for several years before becoming a Deputy for St Brelade District No 1 in 2011 and after leaving office in 2014, he went on to work on planning and travel projects with the government of Alderney. Ms O’Keeffe-Burgher, who unsuccessfully ran for Deputy of St Helier No 1 district in 2011, said that Jersey ‘does not need reform but needs strengthening’.
