Plan to raise rented property standards

The Rent Safe scheme, which was launched by the Environment Department, gives accreditation to landlords using a three- to five-star rating system and is hoped to help improve living standards in Jersey.

Landlords who take part in the scheme will have their properties assessed by officers from the Environmental Health Department, who will then provide a rating based on a range of criteria.

Properties will be judged on their temperature controls, structural integrity and whether they have damp or mould and landlords will also be scrutinised on the quality of their paperwork, including tenancy agreements, whether they are easy to contact if there is a problem, and whether they have arrangements in place to return deposits to tenants.
