Overbooking causes further problems for under-fire Flybe

Two people were left stranded in Guernsey on Sunday night after 48 customers were booked onto Flight BE644 at 6.30 pm on an aircraft that had space for only 46 people.

Last week Economic Development Minister Lyndon Farnham summoned Flybe to an urgent meeting following concerns over the quality of inter-island flights since the launch of the airline’s new ‘franchise partnership’ with Blue Islands – under the arrangement, the aircraft and staff from Blue Islands, which operates several inter-island routes, were retained, but Flybe’s branding and website are now used.

When Flybe staff were alerted to Sunday’s problem they asked for volunteers to stay behind in Guernsey, but initially no one came forward. Passenger Ian Solomon, who was travelling back to Jersey with the St Peter’s under-11 football team, said that when no one volunteered Flybe staff started trying to pick people to come off the plane – to the dismay of customers.
