Lewis Street cordoned off due to incident at Shelter

The man locked himself in a room threatening himself and others, and claiming to be in possession of a weapon, so to protect the safety of the man, other residents and staff at the Shelter and police officers, firearms officers were deployed and Lewis Street was cordoned off.

Trained negotiators were also brought in to talk to the man, who was becoming increasingly agitated, and officers eventually gained access to the locked room and the man was arrested without further incident and on Monday remained in police custody.

Officers -including some carrying riot shields – arrived at the site at around 8 pm on Sunday and the road remained closed at 10 pm, preventing several Islanders from accessing their homes.
