Riot police present following road closure

At around 8 pm officers -including some carrying riot shields – arrived at the site, which is the home of Jersey’s men’s shelter.

As of 10 pm on Sunday night the road remained closed, preventing several Islanders from accessing their homes.

Christian May, the chairman of the West of Town Community Association, lives on Lewis Street and described the situation as ‘very concerning’.

He added: ‘Unfortunately it’s not unusual to see police cars at the shelter, but this is particularly concerning as there are families who live in the vicinity and there are lots of people who can’t get back to their homes.

‘I hope that there is a peaceful resolution for whatever is happening.’
