Public get the chance to go back to Jersey’s ancient past

The Société Jersiaise is hosting a range of free events between now and the end of the month as part of Britain’s Festival of Archaeology 2016 and at the same time, researchers from UK universities are continuing excavation work to uncover further secrets about an early human settlement at Les Varines in St Saviour, while also beginning to explore land at Petit Portelet in Gorey.

The 26th Festival of Archaeology began on Saturday and the Société Jersiaise’s Archaeology Section has organised more than a dozen free activities for anyone interested in learning more about the Island’s past.

From today, tours will be given of St Ouen’s medieval church, St Aubin’s Fort and Icho Tower, and next week will see groups visit Janvrin’s Tomb in Portelet Bay, Batterie Lothringen at Noirmont and St Brelade’s Church and the Fishermen’s Chapel.
