A US citizen managed to call the Island’s police HQ believing he was contacting police in New Jersey.
He told the officer on duty that he wanted to report a truck that was driving suspiciously on ‘Dover Chester Road’, and described how the vehicle was swerving and that its brake lights and indicators were ‘burnt out’.
The States police released the audio recording of the conversation – with the caller’s permission – which ends with the officer saying ‘this must be costing you a fortune’, after informing the man he had called ‘Jersey just off the UK’.
Despite the policeman’s English accent, it took the American a little while to realise he had not called New Jersey police and when asked by the officer where he was calling from, the man says ‘a cellphone’.
