Danger of the police and Customs ‘doubling up’

Under plans outlined in the Medium-Term Financial Plan Addition, Customs are being asked to make £150,000 worth of efficiencies in 2017 and 2018 and £250,000 by 2019 through a service redesign.

Rob Bastable, deputy chief officer for the States police, said that some of that money will be saved by bringing the two separate undercover intelligence teams for each agency under one roof. The units are charged with gathering intelligence on suspected criminals and monitoring their activities.

The change, which will go ahead if the Addition is passed by the States in September, will see the loss of one post, which it is hoped will come from ‘natural wastage’.
