The Islander is in the process of selling off a collection he has been assembling since childhood and which defines popular culture and key events from the 20th century.

More than 100 curios are due to go on sale on 14 September to mark the 250th anniversary of Christie’s Out of the Ordinary auction, which is held every year and celebrates unique and unusual lots.

Mr Gainsborough Roberts, who was chosen by the public as the subject of the 2016 People’s Portrait, said: ‘After collecting for over 40 years the time has finally arrived to share my collection with the world.’

The public can view the items going under the hammer at Christie’s in a summer exhibition that starts on 6 August.
