Grant of asylum in Jersey was first for over a decade

Amir Merikhi (27) was arrested in January after Customs officers found him in a Vauxhall Corsa that had travelled to the Island from France on board the Condor Rapide.

He later appeared in the Magistrate’s Court and was sentenced to a ten-month suspended jail term.

After months of uncertainty he was last week granted British asylum by the Lieutenant-Governor, General Sir John McColl, following a report filed by Customs and recommendations from the Home Affairs Minister.

It is first time asylum has been granted in the Island since at least 2006 and only the second time an application has been heard in Jersey in that time.
