States pass new bass-fishing rules

Under the new rules, recreational fishermen will be limited to catching one bass per day from 1 July to 31 December and they will need to return all catches between 1 January and 30 June.

The minimum catch size for bass will also be increased from 36 cm to 42 cm and the maximum size of low-water nets will be restricted to 100 metres, with the minimum mesh size increased from 90 mm to 110 mm to allow small fish to escape.

Low-water trot lines will be restricted to having no more than 50 hooks and Islanders will also be required to have a permit to take fishing gear onto the beach from the Economic Development Department.
