States to publish all travel spending above £500

In the wake of the South African flight-cost scandal exposed by this newspaper in February, the States has announced an overhaul of the rules on travel, which costs around £3 million a year.

Economic Development chief officer Mike King and Locate Jersey’s Wayne Gallichan – the two men embroiled in the scandal after it emerged they had spent £13,000 of taxpayers’ money on fully flexible business-class tickets to a mining conference – have been cleared of any wrongdoing by a States investigation and their travel, according to the findings, was within policy and no disciplinary action has followed for either man.

Areas where improvements could be made to the system, however, were identified during the review of that case and helped to shape a number of recommendations that have followed from the main piece of work looking at travel and accommodation across all States departments.
