Health to use more GPs to treat drug addicts

Senator Andrew Green was asked in the States on Tuesday by Deputy Mike Higgins what action the Health Department were taking to help people who suffer from drug addiction, in particular those who require methadone or Subutex treatment.

The minister said that the treatment programme, which is provided by the Alcohol and Drugs Service, had the capacity to treat 120 people each year and that there was currently a waiting list for the scheme.

Currently there are two GPs and two Health Department doctors who prescribe treatments, however, under the new scheme more GPs will be able to administer the drugs.
