States refute teachers’ recruitment claim

The rise, which will come into force on 1 June, will take the average salary for a teacher who has been in the job for one year from £33,564 to just short of £34,000 a year.

However, the NASUWT say that in real terms, when factoring in the cost of living, teachers will be worse off, and the union has warned that the standard of teaching could suffer as the Island will struggle to retain and attract teachers.

Fellow union the NUT echoed the remarks and said: ‘It would have a seriously detrimental effect on teachers’ standard of living, on recruitment and retention and, as a result, on our young people’s education’.
