French travel chaos threat as strike results in fuel shortages

Deliveries to petrol stations mainly in the north and west have been blocked by French workers in protest after President François Hollande’s government said it would force through unpopular labour reforms earlier this month.

On Monday, the country’s Transport Minister Alain Vidalies said that 820 petrol stations in the country were out of fuel and a further 800 were running low.

The news of the fuel shortage has led to long queues at petrol stations, and some garages have imposed restrictions per vehicle and banned drivers from taking extra fuel in jerry cans, although Rosie Sanderson, the AA’s international travel spokeswoman, said that the dispute should not stop motorists from travelling to France, though she advised they ‘set off with a full tank’ and keep ‘a look out for fuel stations that still have supplies’.
