The dog, called Mr Bronx, was brought to Jersey in September last year by Islander Jason Gomez and his wife as a present for their three-year-old daughter and the couple had been honeymooning in France and had arranged to collect the puppy before returning on the ferry with him.
Writing on a Facebook page set up to get Mr Bronx back, the couple said that although there were no problems getting their pet through customs and into Jersey when he was seven-and-a-half weeks old, their ‘nightmare’ began after they revisited France for a short break with their puppy two months later, and despite having ensured Mr Bronx had a pet passport after he was micro-chipped and vaccinated, they were stopped by Customs and Excise on returning from France.
Mr Gomez said a Customs officer branded Mr Bronx a pitbull-type and the family were forced to hand their pet over in February and in a post on the Save Mr Bronx Facebook page, the family said customs wanted to seize their pet as they had concerns for the couple’s daughter and public safety concerns.
