Top award for species saviour

Professor Carl Jones has been awarded the 2016 Indianapolis Prize – which has been running since 2006 and recognises conservationists who have achieved major victories in advancing the sustainability of an animal species or group of species – for his work in helping to save animal species from extinction, including the Mauritius kestrel, the pink pigeon and the echo parakeet .

Prof Jones, who won $250,000 and the Lilly Medal, said that the prize was not just for him, but was for Durrell founder Gerald Durrell and others like him who had made his work possible.

Prof Jones, who was born and raised in Wales and currently splits his time between there and Mauritius, will be formally honoured at the 2016 Indianapolis Prize Gala on 15 October in Indianapolis.
