‘Too many ministerial decisions not debated’

Deputy Montfort Tadier said ‘more and more’ decisions are being taken out of the hands of the Assembly and the view of the public.

He spoke out after Education Minister Rod Bryans made a ministerial decision in March to remove free private nursery care places for families earning more than £75,000 a year.

Currently all three and four-year-olds, regardless of household income, are entitled to the free hours under the Nursery Education Fund (NEF), but as of September next year a means test will be introduced which is designed to save £250,000 a year at a time when government departments have been tasked with finding millions of pounds worth of savings.

A public meeting is due to be held at 7 pm in the Town Hall on Thursday to discuss planned changes to private nursery funding.
