New legislation allowing the jailing of internet trolls to go to Scrutiny review

The Economic Affairs Scrutiny Panel has launched a review of the draft telecommunications and crime law, the principles of which were approved by the States on 12 April.

The panel now intends to review the proposals to determine if they are appropriate and sufficient to protect people against offensive behaviour conducted online or by other electronic means, such as cyber bullying and revenge pornography.

Information for the review will be sought from organisations such as the States police, the Law Officers’ Department and others and the panel aims to report back to the States before the debate on the Draft Telecommunications (Amendment No 3) and Crime (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Jersey) Law resumes on 14 June.
