St Patrick’s Day scuffles end with fines

During the early hours of 18 March James Dean Lopes (21) started shouting and swearing at police as they were dealing with a separate incident outside Tanguy’s night club in Mulcaster Street.

Lopes refused to leave the scene and when the officer attempted to make an arrest the defendant struck out and had to be brought to the floor.

The Magistrate’s Court heard on Friday that as the scuffle continued, Luke James Brown (20) approached officers and began to behave aggressively and when Brown failed to co-operate, officers used pava spray – an incapacitant spray dispensed from a hand-held canister – to restrain him, before bringing him to the floor.

Lopes, who pleaded guilty to violently resisting arrest and being drunk and disorderly, was fined £900 while Brown, who pleaded guilty to violently resisting arrest and obstructing a police officer, was fined £300.
