Motorcyclist is caught with cannabis

Andrew Manuel Carvalho Franco was found with 69.8g of the class C drug after being stopped by the police as he was riding his motorbike away from town on Victoria Avenue on 4 January.

The Magistrate’s Court this week heard that the officer had originally stopped the 19-year-old because he was not displaying an insurance certificate.

However, after smelling what he suspected to be cannabis, the policeman searched Franco’s bag and found two packages containing the drugs, in addition to scales.

When they searched his house, the police seized a further 16.2g of cannabis, bringing the total value of drugs found in Franco’s possession to £1,277.

Advocate Jane Grace, defending, said that her client bought the majority of the cannabis for his personal use and that he was carrying the scales because he was returning from purchasing the drugs and wanted to make sure he was dealt the correct amount.

Franco, who pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cannabis, two counts of possession of the same drug and failing to display an insurance certificate, was fined £450.
