States checking weedkiller use to protect water supply

Environment Minister Steve Luce said that while farming is the biggest source of the pollution, bad gardening habits also pose a threat to water quality.

Earlier this month a reservoir in St Peter’s Valley also had to be shut down after it was polluted by weedkiller used at a property nearby.

‘In the past, the department only calculated the data on commercial imports, but more recently we have started to collect information for imports for garden and DIY centres and there are some large amounts of products coming in. Many of those products come in diluted form but some are concentrated and require mixing, and by members of the public who are not qualified in handling chemicals,’ said Deputy Luce.
