Move to facilitate judgment appeals

Proposals have been published for a new Jersey Administrative Appeals Tribunal to be established, so that ordinary Islanders no longer have to lodge appeals with one of several tribunals, government ministers or the Royal Court if they have grievances over decisions such as social security claims, licensing and planning.

It is hoped that the new body, which is modelled on a similar system in use in the UK, would improve access to justice in Jersey by simplifying the complaints process and saving ordinary Islanders from having to spend money on lawyers if they need to take an appeal to court.

A consultation paper detailing the proposals was launched yesterday on the Jersey Law Commission’s website.
