12-month suspension for physiotherapist

Marion Hazel Le Cornu has been suspended from the Health and Care Professions Council Register for 12 months on the grounds of lack of competence after concerns were raised about her performance.

A panel of the HCPC Conduct and Competence Committee concluded during a hearing this week that Miss Le Cornu, who worked at the Hospital from 1980 until her resignation on 17 May 2013, had put patients at risk of harm following a catalogue of errors between November 2012 and May 2013.

After concerns were raised in the autumn of 2012, the panel heard that Miss Le Cornu – who for 20 years was the only physiotherapist working in the maternity service – was put under a formal capability process, which involved her being supervised while she dealt with patients.

The panel found that during the time she was under supervision 41 charges had been proven – they included occasions when she had made flawed assessments, made mistakes in documentation, shown a basic lack of knowledge and inability to improve that knowledge and had shown poor clinical reasoning in identifying the main problems of patients.
