Panama leak may be in conference spotlight

The keynote speaker at the annual private-wealth conference is Prof Jason Sharman, co-author of the Global Shell Games research into beneficial ownership standards, who will focus on the role of central registries in combating financial crime.

Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man have recently come under pressure from the UK government to make public a registry showing the beneficial owners of companies, however, Jersey Finance deputy chief executive Richard Corrigan confirmed this week that there was ‘no appetite’ among island authorities to follow the UK and make such a registry open to public scrutiny.

Currently, Jersey’s registry – which has been in place since 1989 – is only available on request to law enforcers and those with appropriate authority.
