£55k research grant for Jèrriais singer

Kit Ashton beat competition from over 200 applicants to secure funding for a three-year PhD at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where he will continue work carried out during his masters degree in music last year.

Mr Ashton, who is the lead singer of Jèrriais folk band Badlabecques, plans to further research the role music plays in keeping culture and languages alive, after making the survival of Jersey’s native tongue a key theme of his masters thesis.

The funds, which were granted by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council, will be used to fund his fees and living costs over the next three years and Mr Ashton said that the grant was ‘a massive leap forward’ for him and hopefully Jersey culture and Jèrriais as well.
