Eye specialist wins the right to see why his job was cancelled

Dr Amar Alwitry appeared before the Royal Court in October to ask the court to compel the States Employment Board and the Health Minister to release information about him relating to a decision to terminate a job offer in 2012.

In a recently published judgment the Royal Court ordered the release of the documents, which include interviews and information from two separate investigations into Dr Alwitry’s cancelled contract.

However, in its judgment the court also ordered that some minor redaction be carried out to protect the personal information of some people who were named in the documents.

Dr Alwitry, a consultant ophthalmologist who grew up in Jersey but now lives in the UK, was offered a place at the General Hospital in 2012, but was informed his contract had been cancelled just a few days before he was due to start work – he claims the move was made because he had raised patient safety concerns relating to a timetabling issue that meant his patients may not have had access to specialist eye care at the weekends following surgery, exposing them to potential complications.
