Trees down and road closed as Island feels the force of Storm Jake

Gusts reached up to 66 mph in the afternoon as the Island felt the effects of Storm Jake.

Firefighters and police were called to Great Union Road at around 12.30 pm and the road was closed for several hours.

The parish of St Helier said that the road will be closed to traffic between Dorset Street and Journeaux Street as a precaution until a scaffold can be erected and the building can be inspected by an engineer.

Victoria College also cancelled all of their after school clubs after several tiles were blown from the school’s roof.

The States police said on Facebook that they were experiencing a large number of calls due to the gale force winds and heavy rain.

‘If you wish to report storm damage please be patient, we will answer as soon as we can,’ they said.

‘Motorists are advised to be extra vigilant at this time, high sided vehicles, motorcycles and cyclists being particularly vulnerable.

‘Give each other extra space and time.’

There were also reports of several trees down in the Island.
