Care Inquiry costs rise again to £23 million

Costs have spiralled since the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry had its initial budget set at £6 million three years ago, and by last March the projected overall cost stood at £20.2 million.

And on Tuesday it was revealed that an extra £1.6 million has been budgeted to cover the inquiry team’s costs after the panel’s chairwoman, Frances Oldham, QC, said that due to an unexpected increase in its workload, it would not be able to conclude within the revised budget set last year.

The inquiry itself is now expected to cost £15.3 million, with States departments facing bills of £7.7 million – bringing the total spend to £23 million.
