Six race discrimination cases in first 18 months under new law

The service’s annual report has revealed that four of the cases, which were submitted following the introduction of race discrimination laws in September 2014 and included separate claims of unfair dismissal, have been settled.

The other two, which also include a claim under the Island’s anti-sexual discrimination laws which were introduced in September last year, are outstanding.

The report also says that regulations introduced to protect and support Jersey employees, including maternity and family-friendly legislation and the anti-racial and sexual discrimination laws, generated more queries for the JACS than any other subject last year.

In her statement in the report, JACS director Patricia Rowan wrote that it was ‘not surprising’ to see more queries regarding the new legislation.

The five most viewed topics on the JACS website during 2015were maternity, redundancy procedures and payments, general employment legislation, unfair dismissal and zero-hour contracts.
