Help for Islanders with debts

New laws approved by the States Assembly this week, which are expected to take effect from May, mean that a new Debt Remission Order will be introduced to help struggling Islanders.

Under the new order, an applicant will be able to freeze their debts for 12 months and have them written off if they are still unable to pay them after that period.

Outlining the Chief Minister’s proposition to introduce the DRO, External Relations Minister Sir Philip Bailhache said that the new order would help those who found themselves in unfortunate circumstances.
