Asylum seeker ‘aided by brother’

Arsalan Marreakhy (34) is accused, together with his 28-year-old wife Amanda, of arranging to bring Iranian Amir Marreakhy (28) into the Island.

On Monday, the court heard that Mrs Marreakhy was stopped at the harbour at the weekend following a crossing from St Malo on the Condor Rapide.

Customs officers allegedly found her brother-in-law in the boot of her Vauxhall Corsa.

On Tuesday, the court heard how her husband was arrested on Monday morning, having arrived in Jersey from Portsmouth last Friday night.

The couple, who live in Batley, West Yorkshire, had their case transferred to the Royal Court yesterday.

They were both granted bail and will next appear on 15 March.

The younger Marreakhy brother, who is charged with illegal entry to the Island, appeared later in the same hearing.

He was remanded in custody and his case was put back until 16 February, when a decision will be made on whether it will remain in the Magistrate’s Court or be moved to the Royal Court.
