Woman in court over asylum seeker in boot

Amanda Marreakhy (28) appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday after being stopped at the Harbour on Saturday following a crossing on the Condor Rapide from St Malo.

Customs officers allegedly found her Iranian brother-in-law Amir Marreakhy – who, the court heard, had recently lived in the ‘Jungle’ refugee camp in Calais – in the boot of her Vauxhall Corsa.

The pair have both been in custody since the weekend and appeared in court during separate hearings. Both were denied bail and were due to appear again today.

Mrs Marreakhy, who comes from Batley, West Yorkshire is accused of having picked up the 28-year-old after he had spent 12 days in the ‘Jungle’.

‘The Immigration Order (Jersey) 1993 provides for a maximum sentence of seven years imprisonment for this sort of offence.’

Mrs Marreakhy, who wore a blue jumper and had her brown hair tied back in a ponytail, burst into tears several times while in the dock.

She is charged with arranging the illegal entry of someone into the Bailiwick of Jersey.

Mr Marreakhy, who came into the court on crutches later in the day, is charged with illegal entry to the Island.

The court heard that his English is ‘limited’ and an Iranian-Kurdish interpreter was provided to translate for him via a telephone link from the UK.
