‘Work needed’ to counter EU anti-offshore feelings, says Chief Minister

The European Commission announced a new drive this week to align tax laws in all 28 EU member states to fight against aggressive tax practices by large companies such as Google, which is facing a backlash in the UK over its £130 million ‘deal’ with the British government.

Announcing the new measures, economic affairs commissioner Pierre Moscovici said: ‘Billions of euros are lost every year to tax avoidance – money that could be used for public services like schools and hospitals or to boost jobs and growth. Europeans and businesses that play fair end up paying higher taxes as a result. This is unacceptable and we are acting to tackle it.’

However, wider media coverage has also pinned blame generally on ‘tax havens’ and UK Crown Dependencies and overseas territories, including the Channel Islands.
