Liberty Bus ‘disappointed’ at driving ban for driver

Andrew Gordon Scott (51) was found guilty of dangerous driving after he said he went into ‘autopilot’ and forgot he was driving a double decker bus when he ploughed into the Liberation Station in June last year.

Following his conviction on Thursday Liberty Bus refused to confirm whether he would keep his job at the company, even in an alternative capacity. Scott was subject to an investigation by Liberty Bus immediately after the incident, before returning to driving duties a few days later.

Liberty Bus today said that their safety processes had been ‘reviewed and improved’ following the incident.

‘We are disappointed with the court’s decision,’ the company said. ‘This incident was dealt with through our internal disciplinary procedures, and up until this particular incident, and continuing afterwards, our employee has had an exemplary driving record over many years and had never been involved in a blameworthy accident during his employment with us.

‘As a consequence of our investigation into the incident, we have reiterated to our staff the need for care and attention at all times particularly at the place where the incident occurred. We have also reviewed and improved our own safety processes. We have doubled up the height restriction signs at Liberation Station. The corner of the building now has an additional warning sign.’
