‘Something is not a bargain if you cannot afford it’: Citizens Advice warning over January sales

Jersey Citizens Advice has warned that the growing financial pressures of the festive period, including Black Friday and post-Christmas sales, have left many people prone to spending too much and finding themselves in arrears.

Malcolm Ferey, the organisation’s chief executive, said that even hugely discounted goods should not be considered as bargains if the purchaser can’t afford them.

He said: ‘At this time of year people do tend to overspend. The pressures are more than ever with Black Friday, the Christmas period and the after-Christmas sales.

‘Something is not a bargain if you cannot afford it – even if there is a 70 per cent discount – and if it is going to leave you struggling with debt.’
