Appeal against Weighbridge late bar plan rejected

The old Southampton Hotel has been rebuilded

  • 2007: Comprop buys the site from CI Traders
  • August 2012: Plans to redevelop the building while retaining the historic frontage are submitted
  • March 2013: Plans are approved
  • November 2013: Main contractors Camerons begin work on the project
  • October 2015: Work to remodel the main building is completed

The Liberation Group venue, which will run alongside a new restaurant they are developing at the former hotel, was formally challenged by the Pomme d’Or Hotel earlier this year.

The neighbouring business raised concerns about the impact of the revised plans on the Weighbridge area, which they said went further than simply running a restaurant at the site.

However, after reviewing a recommendation by an independent planning inspector, Environment Minister Steve Luce dismissed the appeal.

He maintained the approval granted for the project and outlined reinforced planning conditions which the Liberation Group’s scheme must follow.

Those conditions state that the position of external CCTV cameras at the site needed to be agreed by the Environment Department, that the use of the venue should not deviate from the use previously agreed by the Liberation Group, and that acoustic insulation should be installed at the restaurant and bar before opening.

The appeal was one of the first to be determined under the new ‘tribunal-style’ system that was launched earlier this year. Under the previous system, appellants faced potentially costly and lengthy legal proceedings before the Royal Court.
