Charity auction goes online

A new website, funded by a local donor, went live earlier this week, giving people a chance to bid on any of the items going under the hammer on Sunday 6 December.

Anyone wishing to donate lots for the auction can email Mrs Walker on fionaspurr@hotmail.co.uk or drop the lots off at the JEP offices at Five Oaks for the attention of Annette Blanchet.

By Friday morning, around £9,800 in bids had already been donated.

The 7½-hour fundraiser, broadcast on BBC Radio Jersey in aid of the Jersey Christmas Appeal, is now in its 32nd year and lots so far include a hamper donated by Prince Charles and an opportunity to sit in on Question Time and have lunch at the House of Lords.

John Averty, one of the auction’s co-ordinators, said: ‘We tested the concept of an auction site last year and this encouraged an appeal supporter to fund our new website.

‘The site gives the public an earlier opportunity to view the lots and raises the profile of the auction.

‘It also gives people who will be out of the Island or away from a radio on 6 December an opportunity to bid for a wanted item.

Mr Averty added: ‘The auction day is filled with fun and excitement and we expect the interest generated in advance will add to the number and range of people who phone in and bid, increasing the amount of money raised to help the less fortunate members of our society at Christmas.’

Pensioners

Many pensioners live alone and struggle to make ends meet. Jersey Christmas Appeal vouchers bring financial relief, and the fact that somebody cares lifts their spirits at Christmas.

The neglected child

A grandmother is legally responsible for a young child who has been neglected. Her husband is on a zero hours contract and always runs short of work around Christmas. A Jersey Christmas Appeal voucher is her only means of buying her grandson a toy at Christmas.

The single-parent home

Dad has left home, leaving Mum to look after the children. She goes out to work but only just manages to make ends meet. Jersey Christmas Appeal vouchers are a godsend and really brighten up their Christmas.
