Woman smashed glass on man’s head

Ashtina Natasha Mary Peggs, from Middlesbrough, smashed a glass over the back of her victim’s head at Le Hocq Inn in St Clement during a ‘reckless’ attack in October, the court head on Tuesday.

Centenier Edgar Wallis, prosecuting, said that the victim, who suffered four small cuts to the back of his head and neck, was ‘pushing and shoving’ with the 26-year-old defendant’s boyfriend on Sunday 12 October.

The barman split the pair up before Peggs, who had drunk up to four pints of beer on the night of the attack, smashed the glass over the victim’s head from behind.

The victim told police that he felt ‘a massive impact’ on the back of his head.

Shards of glass were found in his hair.

Peggs, who pleaded guilty to grave and criminal assault, was sentenced to 100 hours’ community service and was ordered to pay £250 compensation to the victim.

Advocate Michael Haines, defending, said that his client, who suffered minor cuts to her hand in the attack, was young and in a stable relationship and had ‘a stable home environment’.

‘She is aware that her drinking may be a problem,’ the advocate said.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris described Peggs’ assault as ‘reckless’, adding: ‘There is always a risk of serious injury, but fortunately the injuries were relatively minor.

‘Nevertheless, even for a first-time offence and for someone who pleads guilty, it is something you could go to prison for.’
