Elizabeth Castle firework damage repairs to cost thousands

Repair plans have now been submitted to the Planning Department after the firework blew up at ground level during the 70th anniversary Liberation Day celebrations.

The explosion blew stone coping off the west ‘jutter wall’, which is on the slipway at the castle entrance, and caused some of the stonework in the structure to move.

Now a planning application for the minor repairs, which are expected to cost thousands of pounds, has been submitted by Jersey Heritage.

It is to be paid by the firework display contractor’s insurance.

Antony Gibb, a planning and heritage consultant who has prepared a repair plan for the project, said that the wall was probably constructed in the early 19th century.

‘It was a faulty mortar, one of the enormous ones that goes up into the air. Apparently it exploded.

‘It knocked coping off and pushed a bit of the wall outwards.

‘The mortar was surrounded by bags of earth, which got spread everywhere as well.

Photos of the site reveal a movement crack in part of the stonework.

An electrical junction box was also damaged in the explosion.

In his repair plan, Mr Gibb said: ‘The entire area will be cleaned and washed prior to deconstruction to enable a further check for damage and to ensure stone taken down is clean prior to rebuilding.’
