Channel Islands Brussels staff forced to stay at home during city lockdown

Soldiers are still patrolling the streets, and people are being urged to avoid public areas although the metro and schools re-opened this morning after being closed for a time following intelligence that a Paris-style attack was imminent.

There are also fears that suspected Paris gunman Salah Abdeslam was at large in the city.

Some further lifting of the restrictions was expected today, but staff at the Channel Islands Brussels Office were due to continue working from home.

Director Steve Williams said: ‘Clearly this is a difficult, tense and unprecedented time in Brussels.

‘At the weekend the Belgian government raised the security threat assessment for the city to its highest level – level four.

‘This means that the threat is judged to be “serious and imminent”.

‘All non-essential meetings at the EU institutions have been cancelled.’

He added: ‘Any residents of the Channel Islands who have to travel to Brussels this week should ensure that they keep up to date with the latest Foreign and Commonwealth Office travel advice and the latest advice of the Belgian authorities.

‘The staff of the Channel Islands Brussels Office are working as normal again today, but we are working from home rather than from the office, in view of the security advice and the public transport situation.’
