Car park to cater for more shoppers

The shop's will be open late on the last four Thursday's running up to Christmas

Fifty-nine spaces will be affected by the change, which will be temporary.

It will take effect from 30 November and will mean that drivers will only be able to park for three hours on level one of the car park.

Currently, Pier Road is a long-stay car park where vehicles can be left for up to seven consecutive days.

If the change is judged to a success, it will continue next year in the hope that it will take some of the pressure off while Sand Street car park, a dedicated shoppers’ car park, is refurbished.

The move has been authorised by a ministerial decision signed by Transport Minister Eddie Noel.

A report accompanying the decision says that Transport and Technical Services hope that the move will make a difference.

The report stated: ‘With the approach of the Christmas shopping period and retailers still encountering difficult times, Transport and Technical Services believe this initiative may help them, which can only be beneficial to the general Island economy.

‘Currently, Pier Road car park has an average of 350 spaces available throughout the day, so the loss of the 59 spaces on level one will not result in the loss of occupied commuter parking.’

Seventy-five shopper spaces were also recently created in the Esplanade car park.

While it is understandable that advent calendars need to be on the shelves in November, is there really a need for any other Christmas products to be on sale before 1 December?
