Jersey Volkswagen owners still waiting to learn if vehicles will be recalled

It is estimated that 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide are affected by the scam which involved the company using technology to allow their cars to cheat emissions tests.

Matthias Mueller, the new chief executive at Volkswagen, said he expects the company to start recalling affected cars by January and for all its vehicles to be fixed by the end of next year.

VW’s UK office have said the affected vehicle identification numbers (VIN) are being released to retailers but stressed that in the meantime all their cars are ‘are technically safe and roadworthy’.

A spokesman for Jacksons said the company was not yet in a position to comment on whether or not vehicles sold by the dealership in Jersey had been affected or would be recalled but did say that staff were ready to help its customers once it has received information directly from VW.

In a statement VW UK said: ‘Step by step, affected customers will be contacted, with details of a process to get their vehicles corrected in the near future.’

Steve Harris, a former mechanic for Volkswagen UK and owner of the Van Centre which stocks VW commercial vehicles, said customers should not be worried about the situation.

‘They may recall some vehicles from Jersey, I don’t know, but its not a difficult job. I imagine they will just send a technician over to Jersey. I think the issue can be fixed with a laptop,’ he said.

Billions have been wiped off the value of VW’s brand and the company have set aside around £4.8 billion to correct emission ‘discrepancies’ and pay potential fines from regulators and legal claims from customers or rival firms.

Last month Advocate Jean-Marie Renouf, told the JEP that there was a possibility that motorists in Jersey could take legal action against the company in the form of a ‘class-action’ – a lawsuit in which a group of people are represented collectively by a member of that group.

Vehicles affected in the UK include VW passenger cars and commercial vehicles as well as the Audi, SEAT and ŠKODA brands.
