Bake Off final expected to be most watched in the show’s history

It’s been predicted that it could be the most watched episode in the show’s history, after 10 million people watched last week’s semi final chocolate challenge.

Commenting on the Bake Off’s influence in the Island, the head of Genuine Jersey, John Garton, said: ‘When I listen to the stats of how many people are watching it, one would imagine Jersey’s no different.

‘No doubt it will be hugely popular.

‘My daughter is 15 and all her friends are into it, baking for it and meeting up.’

Encouraging Islanders to get baking themselves, Mr Garton added: ‘If you’re going to be baking cakes, use local ingredients such as eggs and butter.

‘If people want to send us pictures of what they’ve baked and include the hashtag #GenuineJSY we’ll follow them.’

  • The Great British Bake Off launched on BBC Two in 2010 and has since won two BAFTAs and a National Television Award
  • It was moved to BBC One for its fifth series in 2014 after becoming the most popular show on BBC Two.
  • The show was born after creator Anna Beattie decided there was something about village fete baking competitions that could work on TV.
  • After Mel and Sue were approached to do the show together it was Mel who suggested that the producers should ask Mary Berry to get involved.
  • Prospective bakers first have to fill out a seven-page application form. The next stage of the application process is a 45-minute telephone call with a researcher, following which participants attend two auditions and are finally interviewed by the show’s psychologist to make sure they can handle the pressure of filming.
  • In America the series airs as The Great British Baking Show.
  • The show is filmed over a 10-week period between April and June, and is only aired once filming has finished.
  • It is filmed at weekends so bakers can continue working during the week, and filming can take up to 16 hours a day, with the Signature and Technical Challenges filmed on Saturdays, and the Showstopper filmed on Sundays.
