Backbencher ordered to leave States Chamber after comment about Jesus Christ

Deputy Montfort Tadier made a reference to Jesus Christ attending the Tory Party Conference during a debate on his amendment to the Medium-Term Financial Plan.

The Bailiff, William Bailhache, asked Deputy Tadier to withdraw the remark and quoted States protocol, calling the Deputy’s language ‘offensive and unparliamentary’.

In response, Deputy Tadier said that he had not been allowed to finish his remarks and was trying to make the point that Christ would not have attended the Tory party conference because of his ethics.

He refused to withdraw his comment and called the Bailiff’s intervention ‘ludicrous’.

He was expelled from the Chamber for an hour and his colleagues in Reform Jersey walked out with him. The States sitting was adjourned while he was expelled.
