Cows and produce celebrated at Autumn Show – pictures and video

There were giant pumpkins, a record-breaking marrow weighing 63 lb and a single apple topping the scales at 1 lb 5¾ oz.

A breathtaking display of colourful dahlias from Max and Dot de la Haye, who took the overall top horticultural show prize, dominated the exhibition hall while in the members room, among tables laden with preserves and cakes, in the children’s classes, St George’s School pupil Rufus Elbert had ingenuously used wilted broccoli for dreadlocks in making a scarecrow from vegetables.

Steve Vibert and his basket of vegetables claimed the reserve best in show title

Royal Jersey Agricultural and Horticultural Society vice-president Gordon de Gruchy described the show as a great success as it attracted about 100 exhibitors more than 2014.

‘The more exhibitors we have the better the show, so all in all it has been an excellent show,’ he said.

The two-day event also featured the Island’s Autumn Cattle Show which attracted entries from nine Island herds.

On Saturday, Natalies Action Queen – a descendant of one of the Island’s most famous breeding cows, Natalies Nell – owned by John Le Feuvre and Derrick Frigot of the Natalie Syndicate – was judged Grand Champion.

Clover Tequila Charleen, owned by five-year-old Isabelle Hefford-McCutcheon took the two championship titles in yesterday’s Young Stock Show: Open Heiffer and Exhibitor Bred Heifer.

The cows were judged by Welsh dairy farmer Hefyn Wilson who said it was a honour to come to the home of the Jersey cow.

‘I am impressed with the standard and quality of the cows and I wish I could take them all back home,’ he said.

About 2,000 people attended over the two days and an auction of the cake entries held late on Sunday raised more than £300 for Age Concern, after a bidding war broke out over a Victoria sponge baked by Neil Fauvel, which sold for £36.

A plate of Jersey wonders sold for a record-breaking £20.

Visitors were asked to vote in a competition for the under-fives to find the rosiest apple in the Island, which was won by Patrick Rodrigues.
