Records tumble at Jersey Festival of Speed

The annual event included a quarter-mile sprint at the Five Mile Road on Friday and then a series of hill climbs up Mont de Ste Marie from Grève de Lecq on Saturday and Sunday.

The high levels of rainfall in August had helped clean the roads, in particular for the hill climb. Coupled with the relatively cool weather, this created near-perfect racing conditions.

‘Nearly everybody broke their personal best time on the hill climb,’ said event organiser Robert Surcouf. ‘It was fantastic.’

He added: ‘It’s great to see so many people enjoying the bay and the motorsport. We had a lot of people from the UK who visited for the first time and they are already planning to save up for the next event.’

The festival is open to cars and motorcycles manufactured up until 1979, and a total of 55 vehicles took part, including 12 from the UK.
